Pre Purchase Examination

The pre purchase examination is a comprehensive evaluation of both the physical condition and the locomotor components of the horse. The physical evaluation of the horse allows Dr. Thaler to investigate any medical concerns. Dialogue is exchanged between the buyer and/or agent and the veterinarian to discuss the horse’s history. Eyes, ears, heart, lungs, conformation and body condition are evaluated and noted. An endoscopic evaluation of the horse’s upper airway is completed to determine if there is pharyngeal dysfunction that would limit the horse’s ability to breath during exercise.

The second phase of the evaluation includes the observation of the horse’s movement at various gaits. Firm footing on a flat surface allows for proper evaluation of the movement. The movement is observed in-hand, on the lunge line and during active flexion tests. Lameness or asymmetry in movement is noted and video taped during this phase. It can be further defined through advanced imaging.

Radiographs are typically requested by the buyer as they assist in providing baseline information, documentation for resale and to image areas in question during the exam. See “Suggested Radiographs for Pre-Purchase Exam” located on the Reference tab of our website.

Additional tests that are often requested include ultrasound, thermography and drug testing. After the evaluation is complete, the PPE is fully documented in writing. Additionally, a video of the movement of the horse and a copy of all images will be provided to the buyer upon request.
