24/7 Emergency Care

Metamora Equine provides 24/ 7 emergency care for your horse. That means Dr. Thaler remains on call every day for your convenience. Always remaining\ “On Call” requires that he wear a pager and remain within telephone communications day and night in order to answer questions about an impending emergency or to drop the very activity he is engaged in and attend to your horse’s need. The veterinary vehicle must remain fully stocked, organized and ready for a mad dash out of the “Bat Cave” upon the call from a frantic client about their horse emergency.

When an emergency call is received at Metamora Equine we quickly assess if the emergency is life threatening and requires immediate attention. After the assessment is made on the telephone, it is determined that either Dr. Thaler must call the client immediately to offer advise or drop whatever he is doing in the field and travel to the emergency. Often this requires rescheduling the daily appointments. If the emergency occurs after hours, clients page Dr. Thaler and he responds with a telephone call. When Dr. Thaler attends to an emergency he will make his clinical observations, provide the necessary medical treatment and supportive imaging. If the case requires immediate surgery, as in a severe colic, he will refer the horse to Michigan State University after an abdominal ultrasound, administration of appropriate medications and stabilization of the animal. He will establish contact with the veterinarian or resident on duty and provide them with the details of the case. Providing support to anxious family members is equally important so that the best decisions for the horse can be made. Often the horse owners do not have their own transportation or it is unavailable at the location of the emergency, in this case Metamora Equine will offer a resource list of horse transporters.
